Sūn Sīmiao
"King of Medicine"
Sun Simiao (孙思邈; pinyin: Sūn Sīmiǎo), a renowned Chinese physician during the Tang Dynasty, is often referred to as China's "King of Medicine" due to his significant contributions to Chinese medical practices. One of his well-known quotes is: "First, modify the patient's diet and lifestyle and only then, if these do not effect a cure, treat with medicinals and acupuncture." This quote underscores the holistic approach to health and wellness that is central to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
Sun Simiao and His Holistic Approach to Healing
Editor's note: There are many stories told about Sun Simiao passed down in various texts. Most are rather fantastical, including saving a tiger's life and another where he saves a small reptile and then is invited to a dragon's temple as a reward. Here is one that is believable and is fitting to his Daoist lifestyle and training:
"In a small village nestled in the mountains of ancient China, lived a wise and revered physician named Sun Simiao. His reputation as a healer had spread far and wide, with people traveling great distances to seek his advice and treatment. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Sun Simiao believed that true healing went beyond merely treating symptoms; it required addressing the root causes of illness.
One day, a wealthy merchant from a distant city arrived at Sun Simiao's humble clinic. The merchant, Mr. Li, was suffering from chronic headaches, digestive issues, and fatigue. He had consulted many doctors, consumed various herbal concoctions, and even tried acupuncture, but his condition had not improved. Desperate and disheartened, Mr. Li hoped that Sun Simiao could provide the cure he so desperately needed.
Sun Simiao welcomed Mr. Li with a gentle smile and listened attentively as the merchant recounted his ailments and the treatments he had undergone. After a thorough examination, Sun Simiao said, "Mr. Li, your body is telling you that something in your life is out of balance. To truly heal, we must first address the foundation of your health—your diet and lifestyle."
Mr. Li was puzzled. "But Master Sun, I have tried so many treatments and none have worked. How can changing my diet and lifestyle make a difference?"
Sun Simiao explained, "Our bodies are deeply connected to our daily habits and the food we consume. Poor diet and lifestyle can disrupt the balance of our body's vital energy, or 'qi,' leading to illness. We must first restore this balance before any treatment can be effective."
Sun Simiao then provided Mr. Li with a detailed plan. He recommended a diet rich in fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and advised him to avoid excessive consumption of fatty and processed foods. He also suggested regular exercise, adequate rest, and techniques for stress reduction, such as meditation and spending time in nature.
Mr. Li was skeptical but willing to try anything. Over the next few weeks, he diligently followed Sun Simiao's advice. Gradually, he noticed subtle changes. His headaches became less frequent, his digestion improved, and he felt more energetic. Encouraged by these improvements, Mr. Li continued to adhere to the recommended lifestyle changes.
After two months, Mr. Li returned to Sun Simiao. His condition had significantly improved, but he still experienced occasional discomfort. Sun Simiao then decided it was time to introduce herbal medicine and acupuncture to address the remaining symptoms. With his body already in a state of improved balance, the treatments were more effective, and Mr. Li soon found himself free of his chronic ailments.
Mr. Li was deeply grateful and asked Sun Simiao how he could ever repay him. Sun Simiao replied, "The best way to repay me is to share this knowledge with others. Teach them the importance of diet and lifestyle in maintaining health, and guide them to seek balance in their lives."
The story of Mr. Li spread throughout the region, and people began to understand the wisdom in Sun Simiao's approach. They realized that true healing starts with the basics: nourishing the body with wholesome food, leading an active and balanced lifestyle, and seeking harmony between the mind, body, and spirit."
